I think something important to take into consideration when ‘discourse’ about villain getting redemption arcs is if the character in question is a symbol or a person.

A symbolic villain by nature, cannot change: they exist to embody an evil in a form that can be defeated by our heroes.

However a villain who is a person is an entirely different matter, as people can always change, and most well written characters develop through a story. For these characters, the question isn’t if they can have a redemption, it’s how that redemption is handled that you should worry about (for example neither party should be seen as needing to forgive the other).

(To give some examples from popular culture, the Emperor in Star Wars is a symbol while Darth Vader is a person, in Avatar Ozai is a symbol while Azula is a person, and in Percy Jackson, Kronos is the symbol while Luke is the person.)
